Why Is My Store Security Gate Beeping? 7 Common Causes of False Alarms
Share
A security gate that beeps when nobody is stealing is more than an annoyance: staff start ignoring real alarms and honest customers feel embarrassed. Most false alarms have a simple cause. Work through this list before calling for service.
1. Soft labels were not deactivated
This is the most common cause. If a label is not passed fully over the deactivator, it stays active and sets off the gate. Make sure staff pass every labeled item flat across the deactivator pad, and check that the deactivator is powered on.
2. Tags from another store
Customers sometimes walk in carrying a product with an active label from another shop. If the alarm goes off as someone enters, this is usually the reason. Politely check their bags and deactivate or remove the label.
3. Merchandise displayed too close to the gates
Tagged items placed near the entrance can trigger the gates while sitting on the shelf. Move displays a little further from the gate, or reduce the detection range if your system allows it.
4. Detection range set too high
Many gates, including models with an adjustable detection range, can be tuned. If the range is wider than your entrance needs, the gate may react to items inside the store. Adjust it so it covers the doorway but not the shop floor.
5. Electrical interference
Motors, LED drivers, automatic doors, POS equipment and power cables near the gates can create noise. Keep these away from the antennas where possible, and use a dedicated, stable power supply.
6. Metal near the antennas
Metal door frames, shelving or large metal objects close to the gates can affect performance, especially with RF systems. Leave some space between the gates and large metal objects.
7. Mixed AM and RF tags
AM gates do not respond to RF tags and vice versa, but mixing technologies often leads to confusion about which tags are actually protecting your products. Make sure all tags, labels and deactivators match your gates. See our AM vs RF guide.
