AM vs RF Security Systems: Which One Does Your Store Need?
Most retail anti-theft (EAS) systems use one of two technologies: AM (acousto-magnetic, 58kHz) or RF (radio frequency, 8.2MHz). Tags, labels, gates and deactivators must all use the same technology. This guide helps you pick the right one.
Quick comparison
| 58kHz AM | 8.2MHz RF | |
|---|---|---|
| Typical use | Clothing, supermarkets, pharmacies, mixed merchandise | Clothing, cosmetics, books, budget-conscious stores |
| Metal & foil packaging | Generally handles it better | More affected by metal and foil |
| Soft label size | Narrow, barcode-style labels | Flat square labels |
| Equipment cost | Usually higher | Usually lower |
| Tag & label cost | Usually slightly higher | Usually lower |
Which should you choose?
- Already have a system? Stay with the same technology. Check your gate or deactivator for “58kHz” or “8.2MHz”.
- Selling products in metal or foil packaging (cosmetics, groceries, pharmacy items)? AM is usually the safer choice.
- Small clothing store on a tight budget? RF is a cost-effective starting point.
- Want inventory tracking as well as security? Consider UHF RFID.
